What Does the Bible Say About Abortion and Same Sex Marriage Laws

and Cheating, Unfaithful Politicians?
America's Politics of Moraility
While hordes of children walk homeless on the streets of our largest cities, while we declare war on miniscule countries - killing thousands of our own and tens of thousands of innocent foreigners, and while millions of Americans live without adequate healthcare, the nation remains fixated on bigot moral issues. Citizens fervently cluster to explain what the Bible says about abortion, same sex marriage, and politicians who committ adultery while in office, but fail to recognize such debates appear petty in comparison to our real problems.
Same Sex Marriage Laws
So many Americans wish to deny homosexuals the same public recognition of partnership, the same penalties and benefits of household status, the same turmoil and bliss of a long haul monogamous pact. Allowing gay marriage, or even simply civil unions devoid of religious implications, in itself, hurts no one. No physical or social harm derives from such a law. It merely infuriates a part of the population who finds the allowance immoral, even though other than those people knowing homosexuals can and do marry, the act itself will affect them in no other way.
It seems rather ironic too, that in a nation where the divorce rate hovers around 50%, where less and less people tend to marry, and where many believe family to be the backbone of the USA, people actually want to refuse others to be able to join in wedlock. Yet this past November, even in a state as liberal as California, the people marginally passed a constitutional amendment to permanently prevent any homosexual from creating a union.
I think Americans have bigger issues to be concerned about, like the deficit spending of the country and of California resulting in the loss of thousands of jobs across the board, including the lay-offs of many teachers which can only result in poorer education - it doesn't take a room full of economists and sociologists to understand the detrimental long term impact this will create. The long term affect of homosexual marriage - fanatical speculation at best.
What Does the Bible Say About Abortion?
Does life begin at conception or later down the 9 month long road? If someone aborts a birth, does she kill a life? What does the Bible say about abortion? At the current state of affairs - who cares? While activists, aggressive protesters outside abortion clinics, politicians, and everyone else bang heads about the issue, it looks as though the people we do know "count" as a life get ignored. What about all the children waiting for adoption, all the kids suffering in the foster care system, all the abused innocents under the hands of unfit parents, and all the children under the hands of poverty? It's sad that the same amount of energy, devotion, and air time does not concentrate on trying to create better laws and policies to save these lives.
And while on the subject of saving lives, many of the people against abortion support the eye for an eye death penalty. Many more support a government that goes to war for trivial reasons costing thousands of lives. These people would prevent the ending of a life before it truly begins, but hold no qualms about ending the lives of those already walking amongst us. Poor medical care due to lack of personal resources and horrible nursing home care also leads to many deaths. It's time for the masses to start worrying about the people already brought into the world and saving them.
Cheating, Unfaithful Politicians
Over the past couple years numerous American politicians resigned or rather, fell victim to multiple forces pushing them out of office and ending their careers. Why? Because they cheated on their wives or came out of the closet. I find it ironic that in none of these cases did their wives push the issue, in fact, their wives stood by their side, just like Hillary stood by Bill in the nineties. Obviously, Americans missed the point.
The wives know about the activities of their husbands. In fact, the wives probably cheat too. Many of these elitist marriages form for the gain of power, status, and money anyway - a long standing tradition in the human history of the ruling classes. A strategy that worked well for Hilary Clinton who almost made it back into the White House. Even in the Kobe Bryant "scandal," his wife supported him through the ordeal. No victim, no foul. The only ones crying murder is the American public, not having anything better to entertain themselves with, not having any car accidents to watch or attempted terrorist threats to worry about.
Consider all the people that cheat on each other, committ adultery, imagine every one of them being crucified on television and blacklisted forever from their professions. The nation would sink into complete chaos. I don't remember ever walking into a job interview and being asked if I ever cheated on my spouse - it's not a qualification for working in this country. As long as politicians, who we all assume lie, cheat, and feed from the hands of lobbyists and interest groups anyway, do their jobs and effectively run the country, it's none of our business what they do in their personal life.
Christians, Republicans, and Hypocrite Democrats need to stop being so concerned about the going ons in America's bedrooms and uteri and more worried about the public domain. The media takes a great deal of fault as well, helping politicians and elites use the politics of morality to distract citizens from concentrating on what matters, from actually improving people's daily lives. Then again, the media simply caters to an audience - aiming for better ratings and higher profits, news stations will dish out whatever gossipy and paltry topics our minds will jump to consume. So, I guess the change will need to come from within, to put aside a few personal beliefs, so the government as a whole can start repairing the real damage that surrounds us.
Are you ready to change?

To those of you using the Bible as a weapon against homosexuality, you are wrong. Homosexuality is not a sin. The Bible is constantly being taken out of context to support anti-gay views. Scholars who have studied the Bible in context of the times and in relation to other passages have shown those passages (Leviticus, Corinthians, Romans, etc) have nothing to do with homosexuality. These passages often cherry-picked while ignoring the rest of the Bible. The sins theses passages are referring to are idolatry, Greek temple sex worship, prostitution, pederasty with teen boys, and rape, not homosexuality or two loving consenting adults.

Thats why Jesus never mentions it as well. There is nothing immoral, wrong, or sinful about being gay. Jesus, however, clearly states he HATES hypocrites. If you preach goodness, then promote hate and twist the words of the Bible, you are a hypocrite, and will be judged and sent to hell. Homosexuals will not go to hell, hypocrites will.
This is very similar to the religious bigots of the past, where they took Bible passages to condone slavery, keep women down, and used Bible passages to claim blacks as curses who should be enslaved by the white man. People used God to claim that blacks marrying whites was unnatural, and not of God's will.
thegecko, I must say even though I was raised 'Christian' I do agree with you. We definitely should think of it as human rights. Even though you could say therein lies the contradiction of the abortion debate. It is an individual right to decide - not the government.
An interesting thing I find is that some don't realize what Law is. Many fail to realize that what men calls 'law' is nothing but man's will (it is abstract; fragile), which though we find to be mostly in favor in protecting the interests and liberty of people, there are some that are "passed" to favor a specific few. Also, observation alone is enough to indicate that man governing makes a mess of all things. Think about this: your opinion becoming 'law'....
....That is generally what all laws are! Opinions/beliefs 'legislated' into having power - power backed up by the people or those who made man's will 'law'.
According to the Bible, Law is God's will (though intangible, it is eternal). Essentially, it is His OPINION -- in all His Holiness -- that dictates what should be determining our conscience, as it is His conscience on matters that makes 'law' Law. Furthermore, being an almighty Being, whose power cannot be surpassed, His Law is backed up by Himself; it is the absolute in Law. Understanding 'absolute law' will render to one an understanding that there is then an absolute moral code, which God calls us to live under.
I would also like to add that, yes, love is the ultimate command. But do not think that though He loves you, He will not condemn you. Proof of this is the scripture John 3:16.

And a horse is of course a horse of course.
First, I love the hub.
Second, I am sick of people making comments claiming to know what is and is not a sin. How can you dishonor a church by saying you are married. How can you dishonor God by loving someone- this coming from people who are hating people... What gives. Although I am called to love everyone, including those who hate me, I really feel that if you want to seek self justification by pretending to know the will of God, go to one of those "mega" """churches""" that someone made up to make people feel good about making others feel bad and do your business there. It gets really hard for gay, Christian, taxpayers to live in such a state of hatred and bigotry. After all the greatest commandment is, Love the lord your God and Love one another as you love the Lord. I still love you.
Firstly- if you believe the state can tell you to get married versus God then the state can grant rights to whomever- but if you believe God is the one who gives you that right then NO ONE needs a license to get married. Secondly- there is life in the blood--as soon as a blood cell is created it is alive- to say a thing is not alive because it is relying on an umbilical chord is ludicrous. SIN IS SIN- let's call a duck a duck- homosexuality is sin, abortion is sin and fornication is sin- and there is a penalty for sin whether man wants to pour sugar all over it or no.
Okay, I am not even going to comment on the whole "killing innocent forigners" statement you made initially regarding our "invasion of small countries." But out of curiousity, when did killing terrorists, that want to kill us and anyone else, change to "Innocent forigners?" What I will comment on is you ability to side step (as many liberals do I might add) religion, moral belief, and the status of the country. You want "civil unions?" fine. let them get their medical benefits. My cousin is gay, and he is also christian, and would never dishonor the church by declaring himself "married." Morality comes from teachings of the past. There is no morality in anything you speak. We disagree on all points, but I will never contest your right to say it.
Mogabe, in a theocracy your words would have weight, but here in a democracy religion does not rule the states and morality laws are a function of the government, not the bible. I do not see marriage itself as some self-contained moral unit.
We are quite comfortable living in this Universe, thank you.
Cheers!
Chef Jeff
This issue on same-sex marriage is not being dealt appropriately by both its advocates and its oppositions. It just creates noise rather than enlightenment.
It's been a long, long time since we had a newcast that simply reported the facts, without all the opinions and agnedas getting in the way. I laugh at some of the talking heads of both sides who spout opinions as if they were facts.
I also laugh at Right Wing King's comment above - as if the Right isn;t doing the same! We all need to get a grip and discuss these issues, not shout each other down. Great hub, thegecko, and I hope to read more!
Cheers!
Chef Jeff
I wrote on the topic of gays and gay marriage, we disagree, but you should read it.
I am with the human rights for everyone without harm for the rights of others and the wellness of our community; soon or later:
The People decide what their Constitution says.
If you don't like it, change it, or go live somewhere else.
God says what is sin; homosexuality and abortion are among the more abominable.
If you don't like that, go to another universe.
I gave you a thumbs up because this is a well written hub. I do however disagree with you on a couple of points. Marriage has been defined as between a man and woman for thousands of years. The problem comes in when a handful of judges comes in and decides to change that definition. It went back to vote and the people have spoken - which is what democracy is all about. I am a Christian however I have many gay friends. Although I may not agree with their lifestyle I still love them, and don't judge their actions.
As for abortion, it can be devastating to the mother and all involved. Sure there are many problems we face as we do life but a baby is a life that needs protecting. Instead of abortion there are kinder and more humane ways to handle it. I experienced it myself so I know what I'm talking about, not just throwing some half baked theory out there. Read my latest chapter on abortion and the consequences of it:
This atricle is a joke catering to you freaking left wing liberals that try to force your views on others!
Beautiful, beautiful what a wonderful hub, Yeah , I saw the title, and said OMG not another BS topic. I have to agree with you 100%. To me it’s like they do this stuff on purpose. It's like the Boxer that distracts you with one arm that he is swinging like crazy, then Knocks you out with the fist you’re not looking at. Everybody knows that it's there. But the distraction keeps the focus off of the real danger...Seems like it's all a game, but we seem to be the ones losing. I just don't know.. Thank you for such an outstanding Hub...
Brilliant hub, and well said all round. I'm frankly baffled by some of the stuff that goes on in the States, and I'm so relieved I'm not the only one!
What a nice surprise!
I came here expecting to see yet another misguided babbling - and how wrong I was! :)
Thanks Thegecko! :)
Well put. What this country needs is a political party that espouses fiscal responsibility while not trying to control people's personal lives. Republicans will likely only get back on track when they wise up and jettison all those voices among them who clamour for control over other people's personal/private lives.
Was it Ben Franklin who said: He who minds his own business usually has a good one.
I agree with you on just about everything here. I would say maybe it's a California thing, but there are probably people everywhere that agree with this hub.
Exactly! What a well-written and well-presented hub. You made some great points.
Thank you, right on and hallelujah!
Great hub. I happen to agree with you on all counts-we waste time chasing our opinions, thinking we are just reporting facts.
Thanks,

Some here feel it is a minor thing this abortion issue, our Lord prophesy abortion and birth control while walking to His cross to save thousands unto this very day, In luke 23rd Chapter our Lord spoke of the coming abomination called abortion and BIRTH CONTROL, and spoke the rewards of those who would bring it forth and make it legal, only in this day can mankind keep the womb of woman bear so this is the day/generation in question! These people on this site are so fortunate that their mother and father were not abortion activists, or they could not set complaining on this blog! No greater issue is more important than the stopping of abortion!
Same sex marriage and gayness, the main body of religion speak of the anti-christ as a being that will show up, and take over society, yet what our Lord was speaking of was death/satan/principalities of the air/bacterial microbes that infect all society and cause men and men to prefer the company of man or woman preferring woman, it is so sad the science has now found the cause of homosexuality and all unnatural acts of mankind/womankind, and is exactly what our Lord Jesus Christ foretold!
